The Great Evacuation!

On Friday 24th January Year 6 were evacuated to Duxford to learn more about the experiences of children during World War 2.

Upon our arrival, 6L were met by their 'teacher' for the morning - Miss Edmundson.  She was carrying a cane and seated the boys and girls separately in her classroom. Elbows were not allowed on the tables and everyone was very, very, quiet! During our 'lesson' we learned to copy writing using a dip pen (very messy!) We recited the 8 times table and read a poem 'The Owl and the Pussycat' around the class. During our lesson we had a gas mask drill and had to put our gas masks on very quickly and stand up behind our chairs ready to evacuate the classroom and go down the shelter.

We also learned about rations and were not impressed by the sweet ration which had to last a whole month!

After our wartime lesson we were very glad to travel back to the modern day and chat with our friends again. It was very strict during wartime! 6T had their wartime classroom experience during the afternoon.

We were also able to visit lots of the planes and other exhibits in the museum. We saw wartime ambulances, a German plane which had been shot down and an Anderson shelter. We even went on Concorde!

We had a brilliant day and although it was cold at least it didn't rain! We learned a lot about Britain during World War 2 and it made us appreciate how lucky we are to live in 2014.
