You are either multiplying fractions or adding fractions.
Multiplying fractions - you multiply the numerators together, then the denominators and simplify if possible. The denominators do not need to be the same! e.g 2/5 x 2/4 = 4/20 or 1/5 simplified

Adding fractions - you just add the numerators (the top number) together. You do NOT add the denominators together. e.g. 12/34 + 8/34 = 20/34.
